Director's Profile

Dr. H. S. Shan

Dr. H. S. Shan is former Emeritus Professor and Head of the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering in the year 1966, had Master's in Production Engineering with Hons. in 1968, and obtained Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in the year 1972. Later he did his Post-doctoral research at Loughborough University of Technology (U.K.) at British Council’s Fellowship during 1976-77.

Dr. Shan has teaching and research experience of nearly 38 years at University of Roorkee / IIT Roorkee where he guided 42 B.Tech. projects (mostly from industries), 57 Master of Engineering dissertations and 10 Ph.D. theses in the field of Advanced Manufacturing Processes and Computer Integrated Manufacturing.

Dr. Shan has written two technical text books (which are being followed world over as class texts), one monograph, and more than 170 research papers in National and International journals. He has written several technical reports for defence laboratories. He has prepared web based and Video based course material on Industrial Engineering under NPTEL scheme of MHRD (Government of India). Dr. Shan has been the recipient of several Awards. These include Khosla Research Award, Institution of Engineers’ Best Paper Award, IIT Roorkee’s Star Performer Award for excellence in teaching and research, and Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship Award. He has completed research projects worth more than a million of rupees. He has also been consultant to several industries in the Private sector.

Dr. Shan has been visiting Professor at University of Mosul, Iraq and also at Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Malaysia. He has visited research laboratories of most Universities of U.K., U.S.A., Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Germany. He is the Founder President of Society of Technologists, Engineers, and Managers.

Today we are living in an era of globalization. Boundaries between countries are fading fast. Earlier what seemed to be impossible or extremely difficult is not only possible these days but also quite easy. To get quality education, for example, earlier one had to have abundant resources and travel to advanced countries but it is not so now. Swift Institute of Engineering & Technology has joined hands with Coventry University, one of the renowned universities of U.K., for imparting high quality technical education at Rajpura Campus leading to Coventry University’s B Eng. (Hons.) degree of in various disciplines of engineering and technology. The total cost of study is much less than studying for the same Degree abroad. The students have the option to spend all the four years of Degree program at Rajpura Campus or spend 3 years at Rajpura Campus of SIET and I year at Coventry University Campus in U.K.. The teaching - learning environment at SIET is of world standard as the teaching faculty is drawn from the best of the Institutes like IITs and NITs. The curriculum lays great emphasis on practical and project work besides class room teaching. A sprawling green lush campus of SIET houses state-of-the art class rooms, laboratories and workshops. Guest lectures from eminent persons from Industry and frequent industrial visits of students are some of the unique features of the B Eng. courses. There are ample opportunities for the students to take up R&D projects under "Earn while you learn" and other schemes available to them. In order to cater to the need for their wholesome development, they are encouraged to participate in personality development modules, sports, and extra-curricular activities for which facilities exist on the campus.
